Careless People

Primary text

Sarah Wynn-Williams, a young diplomat from New Zealand, pitched for her dream job. She saw Facebook’s potential and knew it could change the world for the better. But, when she got there and rose to its top ranks, things turned out a little different. From wild schemes cooked up on private jets to risking prison abroad, Careless People exposes both the personal and political fallout when boundless power and a rotten culture take hold. In a gripping and often absurd narrative, Wynn-Williams rubs shoulders with Mark Zuckerberg, Sheryl Sandberg and world leaders, revealing what really goes on among the global elite – and the consequences this has for all of us.

Secondary text

Nadia is an academic who’s been disowned by her puritanical mother and dumped by her lover, Rosy. She decides to make a getaway, accepting a UN job in Iraq. Tasked with rehabilitating ISIS women, Nadia becomes mired in the opaque world of international aid, surrounded by bumbling colleagues. Sara is a precocious and sweary East Londoner who joined ISIS at just fifteen. Nadia is struck by how similar they are: both feisty and opinionated, from a Muslim background, with a shared love of Dairy Milk and rude pick-up lines. A powerful friendship forms between the two women, until a secret confession from Sara threatens everything Nadia has been working for.

Welcome to the Tired Mums Book Club. A group of friends with offspring committed to the gargantuan task of reading a minimum of 6 WHOLE BOOKS in a year. We meet every 8 weeks in a local (to Woodford) pub to discuss a book. You will have 8 weeks to read only one book, with an optionally secondary book too for those with the time. It’s low commitment: if you don’t turn up, no one will care – but when you do, you’ll come away feeling refreshed on the tonic of good company and high-brow discussion of literary delights that we have all read or half-read and, most likely, meandering conversation about our child’s bowel habits. We started as Mum pals who needed some reading accountability but welcome anyone to join us – offspring or otherwise.
