Study for Obedience
A woman leaves her birthplace for a remote northern country to serve as housekeeper to her brother, whose wife has left him. The youngest of many siblings, she has spent her life catering to others with tireless devotion. The country, it turns out, is that of her family’s obscure and reviled ancestors.
Not long after her arrival, strange misfortunes occur: bovine hysteria, the death of a ewe and her lamb, a dog’s phantom pregnancy, confined fowl, and a potato blight. Local suspicion of outsiders seems focused on her, though she cannot understand the accusations or defend herself. Despite her silent diligence, the community’s hostility grows, encroaching ever closer to her brother’s home

Welcome to the Tired Mums Book Club. A group of friends with offspring committed to the gargantuan task of reading 6 WHOLE BOOKS in a year. We meet every 8 weeks in a local (to Woodford) pub to discuss a book. You will have 8 weeks to read only one book. It’s low commitment: if you don’t turn up, no one will care – but when you do, you’ll come away feeling refreshed on the tonic of good company and high-brow discussion of literary delights that we have all read or half-read and, most likely, meandering conversation about our child’s bowel habits. We started as Mum pals who needed some reading accountability but welcome anyone to join us – offspring or otherwise.
